About the High Power Range

Come on Down!…  and join us at the High Power Range!

The High-power Range is one of the original shooting ranges at our club and remains very popular to this day. One of the biggest improvements came in the late 1960s when an enclosed building was erected, along with a stat office. More adequate backstops and a better baffle system have also been constructed.

Today there are 13 benched positions, 5 standing and 5 prone positions. You can sight in your high-power rifle at 50 yards or reach out to 100 yards. All paper targets are hung on backer boards that are provided. No human silhouettes are permitted.

If you’re new to the discipline of high-power shooting, or unfamiliar with the DCFS range safety procedures, be sure to check with a Range Officer or other experienced shooter. You’ll find a wealth of friendly assistance and expert advice in the office, the clubhouse, or on the firing line.

There are a variety of competitive shoots throughout the year, like the “groundhog” shoot. Or join one of the traditional leagues that start off in January and run up to 10 weeks. To learn more about competitive events, inquire at the office, ask a range office, or monitor the club’s website calendar and email announcements.

High Power Range Rules

  • Follow all General Rules appropriate for this range.
  • When loading, the barrel must be kept parallel to the ground. Rifle magazines may be loaded with one (1) cartridge or up to five (5) cartridges at a time. Indiscriminate rapid firing is prohibited.
  • The loaded rifle must not be pointed above or below the backstop area. To reduce muzzle blast inside the house, the barrel of the rifle must be extended at least (6) inches outside of the shooting window. Pistols of any caliber may be shot on the High Power Range with the muzzles even with the shooting window exterior.  Pistol muzzles are not required to extend 6″ past the window opening.
  • Pistols must be shot from the following bench rest positions: #1 & #2 for 100 yards and #13 & #14 for 50 yards.
  • Pistols must be shot from a shooting rest or bag to assist with stabilizing the gun.
  • A minimum Pistol barrel length of 6” is required to permit the muzzle to safely meet the plane of the shooting window.
  • Pistols fired on the High-Power range must be loaded with one round at a time. Pistols capable of holding more than one round will be permitted as long as they are loaded with a maximum of one round at a time.
  • Firing is permitted only at paper targets mounted no less than 12 inches from the top and bottom of the frame. No cross firing is permitted anytime.
  • Cease-fires and/ or target changes must be coordinated between both the Black Powder and High-Power ranges. Once coordinated with the Black Powder range, the cease-fire warning light will be used to notify shooters on both the Black Powder and High-Power range.
  • While targets are being changed, shooters must have all actions OPEN and be behind the yellow line. Empty chamber indicators must be in place. No one will handle a firearm while targets are being changed.
  • Actions must remain OPEN at all times, except when preparing to fire on the line.
  • Use of tracer or incendiary or armor piercing ammunition is prohibited.
  • After shooting, everyone is required to pick up all refuse and material and to leave the area clean for the next person. This includes sweeping up your brass.
  • The use of any rifle that is sold legally as a rifle may be permitted on this range except any rifle chambered in 50 BMG or a cartridge based on 50BMG (e.g. 416Barrett.)
  • Folding stocks must be fully extended and locked in place. Rifles must be fired from the shoulder.
  • Shotguns using rifled slugs are permitted to shoot from the bench positions #1, #2, or #3 only and no longer require prior qualification at Black Powder.
  • Muzzle loaders must use the outside standing positions; powder cannot be dispensed in the enclosed area of the range.
  • The outside standing positions can only be used when a Range Officer is present.
  • Shooters with a current NRA High Power Rifle Classification card may practice rapid fire under the supervision of a range officer. No rapid fire is permitted before 12 noon on Sundays.
  • Rifles shall not be handled during a cease fire; this includes all rifles in the racks or on the benches. Cased rifles must remain in cases while a ceasefire is in effect. No reloading is to be done in the enclosed area of the range.
