About the Trap Ranges

DCF&S was founded in 1939 and trap shooting established its roots that very year. The DCF&S trap venue originally consisted of two houses throwing clay targets and was later expanded to four trap fields equipped with fully automatic, voice activated, trap machines. The trap ranges are open to all members and their guests year around. Trap activity is overseen by club range officers responsible for keeping everyone safe. They are happy to instruct new shooters by appointment.

The game of trap is shot primarily from the sixteen yard line at targets thrown away from the shooter at 42 mph – across five different angles.  The direction of flight, relative to the shooter’s position, and the distance-to-target are what differentiates the trap game from the skeet game.   It sounds more difficult than it is. It is actually a lot of fun! (We also throw Doubles for twice the fun!)   And, since all the trap fields are voice activated, solo shooting is possible whenever the range is not busy.

During the year the club will have fun shoots (e.g., Green Bird Shoots) and provide prizes when a green bird is broken. We also have club shoots, club championships and other events. Dates for special shoots can be found on this website and are also generally announced via the DCFS email distribution list.  Trap Ranges Officers are also a great information source for all trap activities.

Come join us at the Top of the Hill!
